What is a remedy used throughout history for its health benefits and medicinal  properties that is likely currently in your pantry? Honey! Once upon a time this  superfood was considered a sweet offering to the gods and was also perceived to  be a gift of healing from the gods. Packed with phytonutrients, micronutrients and  antioxidants, itsʼ nutrient density and restorative properties provide a pure source  of energy, and make the art of honey one of a kind.

Many of the health benefits attributed to honey come from raw, unprocessed,  unheated and unpasteurized sources. Unfortunately, this is not what you are likely  to find in most grocery stores. Raw and unpasteurized honey is commonly a  source of bee pollen and bee propolis which enhance honeyʼs protective effects  on the body including lung health, digestion, heart and nervous system. In addition  to itsʼ potential to fight against cancerous cells, raw and unpasteurized honey also  demonstrates anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. A  plethora of nutrients doesnʼt seal the deal because raw honey is also a source of  other beneficial compounds such as enzymes, prebiotics and amino acids. Get  your facial glow on with honey, and if used topically medical grade honey can even  aid in burn and wound healing.

What makes raw and unpasteurized honey the ideal choice? While pasteurization  improves the texture and shelf life of honey, the process destroys many of the  beneficial nutrients which make honey the bees knees. Beware of terms like pure,  organic or natural honey because this does not necessitate its raw. Unfortunately,  honey adulteration is a legitimate problem and loose label laws donʼt guarantee  quality. Next time you make a bee line for the honey isle, keep in mind the smell,  color and taste of honey can vary depending on the type of flower itʼs made from.

To ensure your liquid gold is as pure as can be, consider getting your raw honey  directly from beekeepers. Exotic honey may tickle your fancy, personally I am a  traditionalist and prefer to source my honey locally for the best hive to table  experience.
